Early last spring, as soon as the ground was free from snow, a careful exam-ination of this territory was made by Commissioner Middleton and the Superin-tendent of Forests with reference to the feasibility of undertaking reforestingoperations there. The only objection noted at the time was the proximity of therailroad, which would form a constant source of danger from fire. This difficultywas offset to a considerable extent by the fact that a district firewarden residedclose by, and that a number of people living in the immediate vicinity werealways available as a force for fighting fire. Having decided to undertake the planting of about 700 acres of this tract thequestion naturally arose as to the species which should be used. The White Pineis the most available of our forest trees, and, as it had originally covered thisground with a natural growth, preference was given to this species.
