aking in favor of forestinvestments: Notably the phenomenal increase in the value of timberbrought about by an increase in population and continuous prosperity;the certainty of wood production, year in and year out, with which firesonly can interfere; the strong possibility of more extended use of woodproducts in the manufacture of paper, packages, yarns, alcohol, sugar andfood stuffs; the fact that the forest stores its own products away, free ofcharge, until it may please the owner to place them on the market; therapid advance in the value of soil, etc. According to the location of the forest and in a higher degree, accord-ing to species of trees and age of trees, the disadvantages connected withforest investments vary from case to case. Is it to be wondered at,then, that many investors — and notably all lumbermen — are eager toinvest in first growth whilst utterly unwilling to stake their money onsecond growth? The question might be asked: Why are the owners reluctant topractice conservative lumbering, a modus of logging which tends tosecure
