The long lines ofCorinthian columns, seen at a distance, are peculiarlyimposing, and seem like sentinels guarding the tombof the dead city. The principal ruins are: the great Temple, theTemple of the Sun, the„great Colonnade, supposed tohave consisted of 1500 cdmnns, and the Necropolis. In the space around the riins, sometimes a palaceis found, of which nothing remains but the court andwalls; sometimes a temple whose peristyle is halfthrown down; then a portico, a gallery, and a trium-l)hal arch. Lying around in every direction arevast stones, half buried, with broken entablatures,mutilated friezes, disfigured reliefs, violated tombs,and altars defiled by dust. The grand old ruins ofthe ancient city contrast strangely with the Tadmor ofthe present day—mud huts inhabited by Arabs, The Necropolis of Palmyra lies a short distanceN. w. of the Temple of the Sun, in the side of a rav- ii y =^W^
