the foresailfurled. The wind is on her starboardquarter, so that, sailing nearly before thewind her canvas helps her along. Thesmokestack can dimly be seen behind thesails, and the sun coming out of the fogshows over the edge of the topsail. Withmighty vigor and power the great vesselshoulders her way through the water,while the waves dash up on her port bow.Here rushing power, overwhelming forceare personified, especially to one who cansee the oncoming vessel as from a smallboat in a fog. A distant signal has beenheard in the fog, and, almost in a moment,the mountain-like shape looms ahead onthe top of a wave out of the mist. Onecan feel the peculiar fascination such amass of mystery, vastness and gloomypower must possess when it thus suddenlycomes into sight. In this picture Mr.Grant has been singularly felicitious inthe handling of the prismatic colors inthe dashing of the spray over the vesselsbow, especially in the brilliant glimpseafforded to leeward.
