Lights on vessels in the harbor and thecity streets are all aglow; it can then be comparedwith Naples as seen from St. Elmo at the samehour, but daylight quickly dispels the illusion. Here mighty Aconcaqua lifts his eternal snows24,000 feet, but it is 200 miles to the north, andcloud-capped three-fourths of the time, whilstVesuvius is seldom lost to view. Returning to the Grace Companysoffice the proposition was put up to the cashier, and I was told it was equivalent to $437.50 at thedays exchange. I hustled back to the steamshipoffice and put in my claim for $62.50, but was toldthe original quotation was only a figure of speech, and used in quoting only, but in buying, 500 pesoswas the price, and I was given to understand thiswas final. I demanded to see the general manager, and was told he would not be in unti
