Lanciata 1 ul-tima freccia e chiusa 1 esercitazione, i giostranti sfilavano ordinatisulla piazza del Regisole, chiamata anche latrio di s. Siro, avanti imagistrati cittadini discesi dal pretorio, ed al cospetto della popolazioneche accorreva festante a siffatte esercitazioni. Uno dei magistrati lieccitava alla emulazione delle glorie guerresche dei maggiori ; diesse rendevano testimonianza autorevole il simulacro del Regisole —rovinato per insanie giacobine quasi cent anni or sono — e la tavoladi marmo che vedi incastonata a destra dell antica porta di s. Stefano. Con siffatti costumi la popolazione pavese dal Lambro al Sesia,dal Tanaro alla Trebbia, dal Ticinello al Penice, cresceva robusta, bat-tagliera (5) e si acquistava quel posto non oscuro che tiene nella croni-
