r Paugus Mountainstands in the Sandwich range between Cho-corua on the east and Passaconaway on thewest. It is better armed against attack bymountain climbers than any of its neighbors, and this in spite of the fact that in elevation itis the lowest of the range. Its defenses consistof numerous radiating ridges covered with densegrowths of spruce and crossed by belts of har-ricane, miles of cliffs so forbidding as to repelany but determined assault, and ravines chokedby debris of rock and fallen forest. Following the old trail fortwo miles, the party reached a spot where agood-sized stream appeared flowing eastwardfrom the great hollow in the eastern flank ofPaugus. Leaving the bridle-path at this point, and walking nearly due west, the explorers fol-lowed the branch
