  • Significance: The Bingham Canyon Mine was the first open pit copper mine in the U.S. and, according to company literature, it has produced more copper than any other mine in history. Metallic ore was first discovered in Bingham canyon in 1863, but the first commercial shipment of copper ore did not occur until 1896. During the next decade both the Boston Consolidated Mining Company and the Utah Copper Company employed underground mining techniques. In 1904, Utah Copper began large-scale exploitation of the enormous deposit of low-grade copper porphyry ore in the canyon, and in 1906 both companies introduced the first steam shovels use in copper mining...
