f the wooded hillon which Buller and his staff had halted. TheDurham Light Infantry- and the 2nd RifleBrigade were ordered to take the place of Hartsbattalions on the advanced ridge, and supportthem if the opportunity offered, and at half-pasttwelve the Irish Brigade was ordered to advance. At first they could move forward withoutcoming under fire except from stray bullets, forthe high ground to the immediate left was heldby Lytteltons battalions. But a mile from Innis-killing Hill there was a stretch of open groundnear where the railway passed by an iron bridgeacross the stream of Langverwacht Spruit.Beyond the bridge there was cover again forawhile, as the railway ran through brokenground, over little embankments and throughsmall cuttings. Harts plan Avas that his menshould stream rapidly across the open groundand the bridge in single file, and form for theattack in the open ground beyond. This wouldtake some time, but it would avoid the heavyloss that would otherwise be inevitable.
