The dirt roads through-out the district have been worked over by forces using a large road machineand tractor and are in very good condition, having been resurfaced withsand-clay in a number of instances. All of the surface treated macadam in this district is located in NewHanover County, and be it said to the credit of the county officials, theseroads have been kept in excellent condition. Since these roads have beentaken over by the State the maintenance work has consisted of patching,where necessary treating with a new coat of tarvia, cutting back brush, andin keeping ditches open on all of the roads that are under maintenance.The wooden bridges have been rebuilt and are in first-class condition. Inaddition to the above mentioned maintenance work forces have been en-gaged in placing on telephone poles and other prominent objects on the road,the standard route marker, and in placing at dangerous curves, narrowbridges, etc., the danger signs.

FOURTH DISTRICT CONSTRUCTION The Fourth District is composed of the following counties: Chatham,Durham, Franklin, Granville, Harnett, Lee, Orange, Person, Vance, Wake,and Warren. The district is in charge of F. E. Schnepfe, district engineer,with headquarters in Durham. The construction work in this district is incharge of R. Getty Browning, construction engineer, while maintenance workis in charge of W. D. Somervell, maintenance engineer. Chatham Federal Aid Project No. 99-A, located between Orange County line andPittsboro on route No. 75, a distance of 12.64 miles, has recently been com-pleted at a cost of $90,665. This road is of the top-soil type with rein-forced concrete structures. The cost of construction does not include thebridge and approaches over Haw River at Bynum, which is covered by aseparate project. Federal Aid Project 99-B, extends from Pittsboro west on route No. 75,through Siler City to the Randolph County Line, a distance of 21.82 miles.It is also of top-soil cons
