Papers Relating to the Establishment of a Naval Hospital Unit in Bilibid Prison, Manila, P..I.

The original correspondence, transcriptions of which are presented herewith as the "Bilibid Letter Book, 1942" was addressed to the Japanese prison authorities in an effort on the part of our Naval Medical Personnel to carry out the spirit of our last directive from Admiral Rockwell,. District Commandant., namely., "To maintain a Naval hospital in the Manila Area." The Naval Hospital so organized  maintained a continuous existence until 30 October 1944, when the majority of the naval medical personnel were relieved by the Japanese with medical personnel of' the Army.

The original correspondence went into Japanese official file. Carbon copies maintained in the hospital's administrative of files were probably destroyed, or possibly may have been recovered by Army record salvage personnel after the liberation of Bilibid Prison on 4 February 1945. The material here presented was retyped for use in the Supply Department of the prison organization, in charge of Pharmacist C. J. Shearer. It was found among other Bilibid documents salvaged after liberation, and subsequently delivered to the Hospital Corps Archives.
