to me that sufficient attention has been paid to it, and Icannot too strongly recommend its purchase and perusal by every lover ofbirds who has not yet chanced to see it*. For the benefit of those, however, who have not yet seen the book, it maybe briefly stated that it is an account of the system employed by Baron vonBerlepsch on his family estate at Seebach, The District of Lagensalza, inThuringea, for the preservation and increase of useful birds. This system, which the Baron has carried on for a number of years withphenomenal success, includes: 1. Creating of opportunities for breeding. a. For birds that build in holes (by putting up bird-boxes). b. For birds that build in the open (by the planting, cultivating andpruning of underbrush for the birds protection; food-supply, and conveniencein nesting). 2. Winter feeding (the construction and distribution of various appliances ♦For sale by the National Association of Audubon Societies, ig74 Broadway, New York City. Price,40 cents.

After examining a number of holes of different species of Woodpeckers, and noticing that they were all built on the same general plan, Baron vonBerlepsch finally succeeded, with the help of specialmachinery, in making out of sections of trees someremarkably good imitations, which he attached to thetrees in his park and woods, and with the mostastonishing results. There are three types of these boxes manufactured:A, A^, B, C and D, vertical, and of various sizes; E,horizontal; and F, cup-shaped, with an open side. A, with the entrance hole 32 mm. in diameter, andabout the size of those made by our Downy Wood-peckers; and useful also, I should say, for TreeSwallows, and White-bellied Nuthatches, if they canbe persuaded to build in them. A, with the entrance hole 27 mm. in diameter,,useful for Chickadees, and House Wrens (and too smallfor EngUsh
