om the apex of the heap.Around this are driven two circulargalleries—one just level with the ceil-ing, and the other at some height above. The upper circle is much smaller thanthe lower. Five short, descending pas-sages connect the galleries with eachother, but the only entrance into theinner apartment is from the upper gal-lery, out of which three passages leadinto the ceiling. It will be seen, there-fore, that when a mole enters thehouse from one of its tunnels, it hasfirst to get into the lower gallery, toascend thence to the upper gallery, and so descend into its chamber. Thereis another entrance from below, how-ever, by a passage which dips down-ward from the center of the chamber, and then, taking a curve upward, opensinto one of the larger tunnels. The mole comes from the earth withunsoiled fur, which is due in part to thepeculiar character of the hair, andpartly to strong membraneous musclesbeneath the skin, by means of whichthe animal gives itself a frequent andpowerful shake.

SUNLIGHT and moisture fallupon the earth and find it fullof germs of life. At oncegrowths begin each after itsown kind. There is such a multitudeof them that they have not yet beencounted. Each locality has forms pe-culiar to itself. The places mostabundantly watered have differentforms from those less favored by rainand dew, and those receiving moreheat and sun allow more luxuriantgrowths than others if the water supplyis large. The business of life and growth ismostly carried on by means of waterset in motion and sustained by heat. Those forms of life which reach high-est above the surface of the earth arecalled trees.
