much strength andendurance. We remember when a boyseeingsome mischievous urchins repeat-edly throw a tame Squirrel into deepwater for the cruel pleasure of watchingit swim ashore. The sport was soonstopped, however, by a passerby, whoadministered a rebuke that couldhaidly be forgotten. Squirrels are frequently domesti-cated and become as tame as anyhousehold tabby. Unfortunately Dogsand Cats seem to show a relentlessenmity toward them, as they do towardall rodents. The Squirrel is willingto be friendly, and no doubt wouldgladly affiliate with them, but theinstinct of the canine and the felineimpels them to exterminate it. Weonce gave shelter and food to a strangeCat and was rewarded by seeing itfiercely attack and kill a beautifulwhite Rabbit which until then hadhad the run of the yard and neverbefore been molested. Until we shallbe able to teach the beasts of the fieldsomething of our sentimental humani-tarianism we can scarcely expect to seeexamples of cruelty vvholh- disappear. TS
