Text Appearing Before Image:
ime, after a while Iwould have a hard time findingany. They would drop off androll away and get lost amongthe leaves and grasses. Whatwould you do if you were I ? I have a very sharp bill, yousee. So I can peck and peck atthe tree until I have made ahole which will hold an acorn.Sometimes I fill my store housequite full in this way. You can see how they look in the picture. When I want to get at the meatin the acorn. I drive the nut intoa crack and split the shell. Then I have my breakfast easilyenough. Some of the other birds likeacorns too—but I think theyshould find and store away theirown and not try to take mine. Ido not like to quarrel and sohave many friends. Then I have my nest to lookafter. I make it as my cousindoes, by digging into a tree, firsta passage way or hall—then aliving-room. There are thefour or five white eggs and theretoo soon are the little baby-birdsto be taken care of. Now, haveI not a great deal of work ? Doyou not think I am quite as busyas my cousin? 174

THE AFRICAN LION. f Amid the far-off hills,With eye of fire, and shaggy mane upreared,The sleeping Lion in- his den sprang up;Listened awhile—then laid his monstrous mouthClose to the floor, and breathed hot roarings outIn fierce reply. —Edwin Atherstone. (1821) THE common opinion of the Lionfrom the remotest times is thathe is King of Beasts, and a singleglance at his face of majesty issufficient to make us accept it. Kijroar is terrific, and the fact is wellVnown that all animals tremble at themere sound of his voice. The effect ofit on his subjects is said to be indescrio-able. The howling Hyena is strickendumb, though not for long; the Leop-ard ceases to grunt; the Monkeys uttera loud, gurgling sound and mount tothe highest tree-tops; the Antelopesrush through the bushes in a mad flight;a bleating flock becomes silent, theladen Camel trembles and listens nolonger to his drivers appeal, but throwsload and rider ofT and seeks salvationin flight; the Horse rears, snorts, andrushe
