Thewalls at length gave way under the battery of the engines, oneof which, called the Wolf, was peculiarly destructive ; a breachwas made, the ditch was filled up with stones and rubbish, andthe castle was taken. Stirling remained in the possession ofthe English for ten years. It was the last fortress in the kingdomwhich held out against Robert Bruce. To relieve this importantstronghold, Edward II. assembled a great army, and undertookthat invasion of Scotland which terminated in the disastrousdefeat of Bannockburn. The castle surrendered the day afterthe battle.
