I arrived here in entire ignorance of what might be instore for me in the way of my art. I had seen no drawings ofany of its buildings, and I suspect that most of my readersare in the same state of ignorance. It was with no littlepleasure, therefore, that my earliest stroll in the morningbrought me to a Palazzo Publico, which if not exactly magni-ficent in scale is at least very imj^ortant, and has thespecial merit in my eyes of being all Gotliic, and almostunaltered on the outside since its erection. It stands in apiazza which some sixteenth or seventeenth century scenicarchitect has treated with considerable skill.
