South of the church are two cloisters; that nearest to thechurch of ordinary size, but the other, to which it leads,prodigious in its dimensions, and very singular in its effect,being surrounded at regular intervals by the houses of themonks rising out of and above the regular line of the cloisterroof. I went into one of these houses, and found its accom-modation exceedingly ample; three rooms, closets, and a gar-den being provided for each monk. The arches of the cloistersare exceedingly rich in terra-cotta ornaments, and throughoutthe exterior of the church and other buildings it is remarkablehow very elaborate these ornamental mouldings are ; theyare left in the natural reddish colour, and, as the walls arewhitewashed, they have a very singular effect. We foundhere, as at other places, men busily engaged in making castsfor the Crystal Palace at Sydenham, whose managers certainlyseemed to have ordered c^sts of everything that could bemodelled throughout Europe !
