The battleships and cruisers of the squadron, underthe command of Rear-Admiral R. E. Wemyss, took uptheir positions and at the signal opened fire simultane-ously. From Gallipoli the enemy answered with not ashot. Some batteries on the Asiatic side of the Dar-danelles alone indicated that he was on the alert. While the bombardment was in progress the troopsdetailed for the preliminary landings were transferredto the boats. The landing at Eski Hissarlik Point wasentrusted to the South Wales Borderers, commanded byLieut.-Colonel Casson. Here the chief obstacle provedto be the current.
