and chin, are paleochreous yellow; region of the eyes, crown of the head, and nape of the neck, greyishwhite; neck, as far as the collar, ochreous yellow, tinged with orange; collar, abouthalf an inch in width, glossed with green; breast, mantle, scapulars, and under partsof the body, gall stone yellow, tinged with orange, being deepest upon the breast;the feathers upon the upper parts of the body have the margins paler, and the longtertials pass into sienna yellow; lesser and middle wing coverts, white; secondary quills,green, glossed with purple, and forming a large speculum; greater quills, black; lowerpart of the back, upper tail coverts, and tail, black, glossed with green; bill, legs, andfeet, black. The bill is lead-colour; the irides are yellowish brown. The legs, toes,and their membranes are, according to Yarrell, of a brownish gray. The female resembles the male, but wants the black collar. The male measures in length about two feet two inches. The female is rathersmaller. 1

The gaudy colouring of this handsome bird, causes it to be much sought after bycollectors of stuffed birds; and it certainly makes a striking addition to the ornamentalcharacter of the collection. The Shieldrake is found widely distributed over England, Ireland, and Scotland, wher-ever there is an extent of flat common or warren, or undulating land free from cover,and where the shore in addition is low and sandy. It is however sometimes found inmore. elevated districts, of the same prevailing character. Out of these countries, it is met with, in more or less abundance, in France, Germany,Holland, Italy, Norway, and Sweden; and is a winter visitor
