Photo No. 46. Neate Coarse-ore Furnaces, at the Bella Union Mine, Napa County, February, 1916. furnace of this type at the Bella Union mine, near Oakville, NapaCounty, was repaired (see Photo No. 46) and again put into service;but its use is at the present writing discontinued. The New Idria coarse-ore furnace (see Plate XXIX) was developedand designed by )\Ir. B. )\I. Newcomb, for a number of years generalsuperintendent of the New Idria Quicksilver ^Mining Co., and pre-viously of the Oat Hill, ^Etna, and Knoxville groups. As describedby Forstner- the fire is applied on both sides of the charge, which is only 4 feet through, and6 feet long in each compartment at the level of the top of the fire chambers, and is Cal. QUICKSILVER RESOURCES. 225 heated at three sides, while besides, as it comes into the fire chambers, the chargespreads, thus causing its speedy heating to the highest temperature in the furnace.The depth of tlie discharge doors below the level of tlie Are chamber gives the ore achance to cool off, and to give off the mercury vapors not volatilized during itspassage in front of the Are cliamber. This furnace is 17 feet wide, 24 feet throughat the level of the Are chamber, and has a total height of 42J feet from drawing floorto charging track. It handles from 90 to 100 tons per 24 hours; its cubic capacityis 2400 feet, hence the ore remains a little above 24 hours in the furnace. It is runby two shifts- of five men eachâone furnace man, two cliargers, and two drawersâand reciuires not quite 2J cords of wood per day.== The excessively low fuel consump-tion is partly due to the high (?) percentage of iron sulphide in the ore. There are two of these furnaces in operation at New Idriaâ
