Studentsfound deficient in spelling will be assigned to a spelling class. *These courses in methods are offered to those who have had the regularcourses in these subjects for two years. Provision is also made for those whohave had one years work in drawing or music by sectioning the class. Stu-dents who have completed the music or drawing for any course may take theforward course, or may elect Household Arts or Industrial Arts in its stead. tThese subjects repeat for the second-term section of the class. In addition to the courses here tabulated, a commercial course may beoffered. Students interested should apply to the President of the school forinformation.

H c CIS <S cs ohi c S3 Description of Courses EDUCATION The purpose of the courses in this department is to prepare youngwomen for the work of organizing, governing, and teaching in theschools of Virginia. In addition to broad and accurate scholarship,a teacher should be trained in the underlying principles of individualand social life and development, and should comprehend the meaningand aim of education. She should, furthermore, be acquainted withthe best practices of the teaching profession and the theories uponwhich such practices are founded. A knowledge of child nature andgrowth is absolutely essential. Not only are broad and accurate knowledge of principles and anacquaintance with the most approved methods in education necessaryfor the best equipment of the teacher, but also the ability of practicalapplication in teaching. An opportunity for obtaining this last ac-quirement is found in the actual teaching under direction in theTraining School. JUNIOR YEAR Theory of Education
