From indigenous English senti-ment and the continuous tradition of centuries it brokeaway. Henceforth the freemason builder disappearsfrom Cambridge, and his place is taken by the travelledarchitect who borrows his designs from the palacesof Italian nobles. The squires or parsons son,familiar with the darkness and inconvenience ofhis Gothic home, had little comfort in the cold re-finement of his new college chamber, and the superiorelegance of the foreign architecture did not reconcilehis father to the loss of old, homely associations. Sothe spirit of the University, like its architecture,ceased to be national ; and, when the life that informedthe foreign art ebbed out in the course of the eighteenthcentury, the pulse of Cambridge beat very faintlyindeed.

THE REFORMED COLLEGES i2t The foundation of Sidney Sussex (1596) followedhard upon that of Emmanuel. As in the case ofEmmanuel, the site chosen for it had been previouslyoccupied by a house of Mendicants. The only re-maining relic of the once stately abode of the GreyFriars at the time when the site was procured forSidney was an old building used as a malthouse. Theproperty, consisting of about six acres of land, hadbeen granted to Trinity in 1546, eight years afterthe Dissolution, and by that college it was, andremains, leased to Sidney for ever for an annual rent of£13, 6s. 8d. Sidney was the latest example of a Cambridgecollege founded by a noble lady. It does not appearthat her beneficence had been solicited by any memberof the University. Frances Sidney was married toLeicesters rival, the Earl of Sussex ; she was the auntof the famous Sir Philip Sidney. She died in 1589,and by her will left a sum of ^^5000, together with allher unbequeathed estate, for the purpose of foundinga c
