the ladies, twoshells passed through the side of the cabin, within afew inches of our heads. The shots grew fewer in number, and some of themdropped in the river behind us. Just as we thought allalarm was over, we saw smoke issuing from the cabingangway. Then, some one shouted, TJie boat is onfire! Dropping a lady who evinced a disposition to faint,I entered the cabin. A half-dozen men were there be-fore me, and seeking the locality of the fire. I was firstto discover it. A shell, in passing through a state-room, entered apillow, and scattered the feathers through the cabin. Aconsiderable quantity of these feathers fell upon a hotstove, and the smoke and odor of their burning causedthe alarm. The ladies concluded not to faint. Three minutesafter the affair was over, they were as calm as ever.
