Canada,The Canadian consisting of the King, an Upper House,Parliament. styled the Senate, and a Lower House,styled the House of Commons. The Senate consists of eighty-three members, ap-pointed for life by the Governor-in-Council; twenty-fourfrom Ontario, twenty-four from Quebec, ten each .fromNova Scotia and New Brunswick, three from BritishColumbia, four each from Prince Edward Island, Mani-toba, Alberta and Saskatchewan. Each Senator mustbe not less than thirty years of age, a born or naturalizedsubject, and possessed of property in his own province,real of personal, of the value of $4,000. He must con-tinue to be a resident within the province for which he isappointed. The House of Commons consists of 214 members,elected for five years (unless the House is sooner dis-solved) on the basis of representation by population forthe older provinces, the arrangement being that the Pro-vince of Quebec shall always have sixty-five members,and the other provinces proportionately to population

By provinces, under the latest rearrangement, the 214representatives in the Commons are apportioned as fol-lows :— 86—Ontario, ^ 65—Quebec, _ ( Original provinces of the 18—Nova Scotia, I Confederation. 13—New Brunswick, ^ 4—Prince Edward Id.,10—Manitoba, 7—British Columbia, 5—Alberta, 5—Saskatchewan, I—Yukon. Bills for appropriating any part of the public revenueor imposing any tax or impost must originate in theHouse of Commons, but no such bill can be introducedunless recommended by message from the Governor-General. Other bills may be introduced into eitherhouse and become law when they have passed bothhouses of Parliament and have been signed by the Gov-ernor-General.
