anada. In Nova Scotia a railway was built in 1839 to connectthe coal fields of Pictou with the loading grounds on theGulf of St. Lawrence. It was, however, in the year 1851 thatThe First the country began to feel the need for Transcontinental a comprehensive system of railways.Line. In that year an Act was passed by the Legislature of the Province of Canadamaking provision for the construction of a main trunkline through the two Canadas. In the same year dele-gates from the British North American provinces wentto England to arrange for the construction of a railwayfrom Quebec to St. John and Halifax, and in that yearthe construction of a railway through British territory tothe Pacific Ocean was brought before the Legislature. In 1855 there were 563 miles of railway in what isnow the Dominion of Canada. The Grand Trunk Com-pany had also constructed 292 miles in the United Statesto connect Montreal and Portland. It was, therefore,with promise for the future rather than actual fulfilment

Work went on slowly at first. , By 1865 the 563miles had become 1,290 miles, and in 1867 there wereabout 2,000 miles of railway in the country. The unionof the four provinces of Upper and Lower Canada, NovaScotia and New Brunswick took place in 1867. In thenext decade there was an addition of 3,218 miles. By1887 the added miles were 8,575, and in 1904 the totalmiles of track laid were 19,611. Since 1867 the 2,000 miles with whichCanada began her existence as a Domin- The Presention have increased over nine times. Mileage. Of existing railway Ontario has 7,220miles; Quebec, 3,510; New Brunswick, 1,460; NovaScotia, 1,104; Prince Edward Island, 210; Manitoba,2,364; Northwest Territories, 2,200, and British Colum-bia, 1,544.
