Oneach border of this region, where the rainfall is lighter, the forestis gradually replaced by grass, and still further to the north andsouth the grass land is replaced by dry steppe or desert. Sec. 568. Animals. — Africa is the land of big game. Therhinoceros, giraffe, zebra, Hon, and leopard frequent the opengrass lands, and the elephant is found in both the tropicalforest and the grass land. The single-humped camel is used as adomestic animal in the northern deservs. The rivers of the inter-tropical belt abound in hippopotami and crocodiles.
