ead in two senses ; the one in whichat all times it refers to hangings generally ;the second in which it implies a specialmethod of producing a textile fabric. Theearlier hangings, although pains have beentaken to prove that they were in a large degreemade by this special process, appear, on thewhole, to have been of lighter material than thatof the special fabric ; and the ornamentation onthem was rendered by weaving, embroidery,or painting. Indications that the special pro-cess was known in early times have beengiven, but it was then applied to making smallornamental trimmings of costume. The appli-cation of the special process to the making ofworks on a much larger scale than that ofsuch trimmings, seems to occur in the 12thor 13th centuries, although in old Asiaticcivilisations it had probably been employedfor carpets, the patterns of which were com-posed of formal, somewhat geometric devices,arranged symmetrically.
