okedupon our army as a kind of militarypolice, sent by the Sultan to enforceorder and restore the Khedive. They thought that what we deemedthe crowning victory at Tel-el-Kebirwas only the peaceable and voluntarysubmission of Arabi Pasha and hisgenerals, and this view, or construction,of the state of events, was sedulouslypropagated by the Ulema, to hide theii*own defeat. On the 2nd of October the Khedivegave a dinner to Sir Garnet Wolseley,the Dukes of Conn aught and Teck, allthe Generals and their Staffs, AdmiralHoskins, and Sir E. Malet. They woreuniforms and decorations, and BakerPasha appeared in the dress of a TurkishGeneral. Afterwards a magnificentgarden fe/e was largely attended by theofficers of both services and by civilians.The Ghczireh Gardens were brilliantlyilluminated by the electric light, which,however, was thro^\Ti into the shade by2,000 rockets, while the bands playedBritish and Arab music. The royalparty withdrew at midnight after Godsave the Queen had been played.
