JOHN HENRY ROOS
Dutch School
1631-1665
Henri Roos spent the greater portion of his life in Germany. He
was accounted one of the most celebrated animal-painters of his
time. He designed everything after nature, and frequently placed
his animals in attitudes the most singular and difficult to be repre-
sented. His landscape is pleasingly diversified with pleasant fields,
woodlands and shepherds cots, or ruins more picturesque, always
adapted to the subject represented. His coloring is fresh and
vigorous, his pencil firm and decided.

IDEAL LANDSCAPE IN ITALY

A scene of bucolic repose in which landscape, cattle and
human beings share that complete restfulness which is so delight-
ful in the country and when transferred to canvas brings its mes-
sage of peace into the turmoil of city. The shepherdess seated to
the right holds a lusty infant to her breast; the cattle dream as
they chew the cud; goats and sheep recline at ease near eccentric
towers of tufa rock. An exquisite distance with cliff-like plateau
and far-off faint hills is broken by the crenelated walls of a 13th
century castle.
Fine drawing, mellow colors, suave and tenderly brushed ani-
mal and human forms — a perfectly wrought canvas of an original
composition.
On canvas; height, 181/2 inches; width, 231/2 inches.
