Lessonsare also given in first aid in illness and injury. 1 Familiar talks on personal habits as affectinghealth and character are given once a month to eachclass of girls. TRAINING COURSE FOR TEACHERS The young women, almost without exception, andmost of the young men who graduate, engage in someform of teaching. The course of study therefore pro-vides that all members of the Senior Class shall havean opportunity to observe class-room work and studythe educational principles which that work illustrates. Some time is devoted to psychology for the pur-pose of acquainting the students with the elementaryfacts concerning the mind and its activities, and toform a basis for the principles of pedagogy. ACADEMIC COURSE All the young women, and a constantly increas-ing number of the young men, take a practical coursein public-school teaching, devoting half a year to actualteaching. The Whittier School, with over four hun-dred children of all ages from the neighborhood, offersexcellent opportunities for the training of teachersunder natural conditions.. Each teacher in training isput in charge of a group of children—there may bemore than one grade in a group—and is responsiblefor the teaching and control of the room. This ex-perience is most helpful to those who intend to teachin day schools and Sunday schools, or to do neighbor-hood work. The pupil-teachers assist in teaching-sewing, manual training, and gardening. Severalmembers of the class have an opportunity to teachthese subjects in social settlements in the neighbor-hood. The aim is to give to those preparing to teach,such professional equipment as shall enable them togo into the schools of the South and teach the usualsubje
