Text Appearing Before Image:
of fact £2800 was subscribedbefore any appeal went abroad to the pubUc. There is no isolated hill adjacent to the mainroad and accessible from the Lake anywherebetween Bowness and Ambleside from whichsuch incomparable views of Windermere can beobtained, and it should be remembered that thispoint is within 1070 yards of Windermere station, for which Miller Ground is the nearest landing. Not only is the whole of the Lake northwardseen, but gazing south, the eye passes over theindented shores and wooded islands, that seemhke some fairy flotilla anchored and at rest, to theFerry, and is carried on thence to Gummershowand Lakeside, while in the west, Coniston OldMan, Grey Friars, and Wetherlam are seenbeyond the Furness fells, and we are carried onby Pike o Blisco, Bowfell, the Langdale Pikesand Silver-How to Fairfield and the High Streetrange in the east. . Beautiful in the Maytide morning, the scenefrom here is never so mysterious as when onsome October eventide the Mere flames hke fire
Text Appearing After Image:
QUEEN ADELAIDES HILL 233 against the deep purple and blue of the woodeddistance, whilst the reflected light from a goldensky beyond Wrynose burns upon the water to thenorth. No wonder that Canning and Sir Walter Scott, with Christopher North, paused here on their wayto visit the genial Bishop at Calgarth. No wonderthat Wilberforce, when staying at Eayrigg, clombhither to observe so fair a scene. Nor are wesurprised that those who were responsible for thearrangements of the visit of Her Majesty, QueenAdelaide, to the Lake District, which took place inthe year 1840, should have arranged that on Sun-day, July 26th, the royal barge should wait forQueen Adelaide at the Bowness landing afterafternoon service in the Parish Church, and con-vey her up the Lake as far as * Eayrigg Bank, asAdelaide Hill was then called. The royal partywas there met by the Eev. Fletcher Fleming andhis wife, the owners of the Eayrigg estate, andfound chairs placed for them at the view-pointbeneath a royal standard.
