messuage and 1 croft, 2s. ; from Robert de Borley, whoholds 1 messuage and 10 acres of land, 3s.: from Thomas leWarele, who holds half a virgate of land, 2s.; from John Attewodeand William Bagocl, who hold half a virgate of land, 2s. Andthere are there of rent of assize of 5 villeins 35s., each of whomholds half a virgate of land for 7s. And there are there of rent ofassize of 4 cotters 7s., 3 of whom hold 1 cottage and 1 croft for2s., and the other one holds 1 messuage for 12/7. And these rentsare due at the Feast of St. Michael and at the Annunciation ofthe Virgin Mary by equal portions. And they say that the pleasand perquisites of the Court of AVeston and Newton are worthyearly Sd., (qu. IS//.) And they say that John, son of the afore-said Hugh de Weston, is the next heir of the same Hugh, and thathe was 28 years of age at the Feast of Easter hist past. WESTON-UNDE U-L1Z ARD, IN THE COUNTY OK STAFFORD. 31 who in 33 Ed. I (1305), as Thomas son of Hugh cle Weston, with-drew his plea of debt against John de Stretton, Parson of theChurch of Weston near Brewode.1 There was a Thomas deWeston, acolyte, who succeeded John de Stretton as Eector ofWeston in November 1309,2 and was apparently still Parson ofWeston in 1321,8 but according to the Lichfield Diocesan Registerthis Thomas de Weston was dead in 1328, whereas we findThomas the son of Hugh de Weston still living in 1344 (sqq post,p. 33). If it be admissible to suppose that the Register isinaccurate in this respect, and that the admission of Stephen deBromley to the Church of Weston in 1328 was really on theresignation not the death of Thomas de Weston, it was probablythe same Thomas de Weston whom we afterwards meet with asRector or Parochial Chaplain of Blymhill.
