The most remarkable of the JesuitFathers who, during the 17th cen-tury, died in Canada, martyrs totheir faith or their apostolic zeal,were : 1° Father de Noue, found frozenon the banks of the St. Lawrence,opposite Sorel, February 2ttd 1646. 2° Father Jogues, killed with ahatchet whilst preaching to theIroquois, October 16th 1646. 3° Father Daniel , shot witharrows and musket balls by theIroquois, July 4th 1648. 4° Fathers de Brebeuf and Ga-briel Lallemant, who died at thestake among the Iroquois, March16* and 17th 1649. 5° Father Gamier, killed by theIroquois, December 7th 1649. 6° Father Chabanel, drowned byan apostate Huron, December 1649. 7° Father Buteux, butchered bythe Iroquois, May 10th 1652. 8° Father Garreau, killed by theIroquois, September 2nd 1656. 9° Father Pierron, put to deathby the Indians,-in March 1673.

A peine le Souverain Pontife PieVII eut-il en 1814 ranime et rap-proehe les membres 6pars de lan-cienne Compagnie de Jesus, quunessaim de missionnaires en sortitcomme les abeilles sortent de leurruche au printemps. Les pays qui 6taient les plus ensouffrance durent etre servis les pre-miers ; mais le Canada, bien quepotirvu assez abondamment dou-vri&rs evangeliques, avait garde untrop bon souvenir de ses premiersapotres pour ne point les rappsleravec amour; du reste,le pays grandis-sait a vue dceil et ses besoins se-tendaient dans la meme proportion. En 1839, apres moins de 40 ansdabsence, la Compagnie de Jesusreparaissait sur les rives du SaintLaurent. Le Pere Chazelle, alors rectear duCollege Ste. Marie, au Kentucky,est appele a Montreal par lentremisede son ancien eleve, Messire Qui-blier, supericur des Messieurs d^ St.Sulpice, pour y donner les exercicesde la retraite pastorale au clerge dudiocese.
