In pa-recchie di queste case restano ancora infissi, tra una finestra e laltra, dei sottili braccidi ferro che a quei tempi servivano di sostegno agli sciorinatoi sui quali si solevanostendere, per farli asciugare al sole, i tessuti di lana la cui industria — 1 abbiamogià accennato — veniva allora esercitata in Ascoli in quasi tutte le case. Tra le opere private ascolane, costruite durante i secoli XIII e XIV, devono es-sere ricordate le torri gentilizie che sorsero accanto alle case dei nobili quali segnidi orgoglio e di potenza. Pochi esemplari di queste torri si elevano oggi al disopradella città quasi vogliano ancora sfidarla con aria minacciosa ; ma se si contano inumerosi resti, tuttora esistenti, di quelle che furono mozzate e ridotte ad abitazione ;se si tiene calcolo della gran quantità di esse che nel secolo XVII si slanciavano an-cora verso il cielo, siccome le vediamo in una carta topografica e prospettica di
