After suffering capture andescaping the sentence of death, he had been exiled to theother side of the world. Escaping from captivity he hadbecome an American citizen and living in New York wasfamous and popular among all classes of citizens whom hedelighted with his magnetic eloquence, and the finished andbeautiful productions of his pen. ^ Then began the terrible war between the Government ofthe Union and the seceding states. Believing that the pres-ervation of the Union was the hope of mankind, he threwhimself into the conflict with all the brilliancy of his intei-lect and all the power of his manhood. The commands thathe organized and lead, fought with courage and despera-tion and won a never fading wreath of immortality.
