tis mounted on four steel springs of S form, which areattached to the frame by nuts on the screwed ends ofthe stays carrying the pin on which the pedals work.Rods jointed to the pedals turn the crank-shaft, as willbe seen in the engraving. The second handle is merelyto afford support for the left hand while the right isoccupied in steering. The tricycle is fitted with tangent wheels, in whichthe spokes are crossed, and each spoke locks the other.By this arrangement greater lightness can be obtainedfor a given strength ; and another great advantage isthat in the event of a spoke being broken, another canbe replaced by the rider in a few minutes. The ma-chine can be readily taken to pieces and packed insmall compass. This is the pattern of tricycle shown upon theStarley monument at Coventry, and is that which wasafterwards changed from the lever-motion to the crankand sprocket-chain, and extensively manufactured at agreat works in the Cycle City. 262 CYCLING ART, ENERGY, AND LOCOMOTION.

Turning the crank-shaft 6 in any suitable mannercauses the pronged foot-pieces/ of the rods d\ cP, cl^,and (i* to take hold of the ground, and thereby propelthe wagon, and by arranging the cranks as is shown inthe drawings one rod after the other is brought intoand out of action, securing a continuous action of themechanism to propel the wagon, all as is obvious with-out further explanation. ^ The lines g hold and keep the rods to the actionof thei
