This belt begins probably fifteen milessouth of St. Joseph, in Berrien county, and extendsnorthward to the northern shores of Traverse bay, Lee-lanaw county, a distance of some 190 miles; but not allof this belt is successful even though near the lake, itbeing a notable fact that tlie most successful regionsare where the land liiip rxlnids nearest the center ofthe lake, while it is notic-r.-iblc that where the lake isbroadest, extending into the land, the least success isattained. The wonderful success of this region can be ac-counted for by just two conditions, a suitable soil andthe thermal influence of Lake Michigan. At this time and up to this date the commercial■orchards were in a small radius around St. Joseph andBenton Harbor, the sales being almost entirely made inChicago, as there were no railroad communications withother cities and the steamboat service to Chicago wasfairly good. During the year 18fi7 yellows was firstnoticed by men who knew the disease, although it nodoubt existed here a year or two previous. However,little attention was paid to this disease until it gainedsuch impetus and virulence that these orchards, valuedat and selling as high as $1,000 per acre, were swept outof existence.
