The alternator is an arrangement by meansof which mechanical energy is used to cause the magnetic flux froma magnet to pass through the opening of a coil of wire first in oneand then in the opposite direction. This varying magnetic fluxinduces in the coil, first in one direction and then in the other, whatis called an alternating electromotive force, which in turn producesan alternating current in the coil, and in the circuit which is con-nected to the terminals of the coil. In the common type of alternator, the above-mentioned magnetand coil move relatively to each other. Fig. 1 shows the essentialfeatures of such an alternator.
