anding and the adjacent track. One controller may be defective in that one of the contact fingersmay not make connection with the drum. In this case try the othercontroller if there is another one on the car. The fuse may be blown or the circuit breaker opened. Theoccurrence of either of these, however, is usually accompanied bya report which leaves little doubt as to the cause of the interruptionin current. The lamp circuit is always at hand for testing the presence ofcurrent on the trolley wire or third rail. If the lamps light whenthe lamp circuit is turned on, it is a tolerably sure sign that anydefect is somewhere in the controllers, motors, or fuse boxes, althoughin case the cars are on a very dirty rail enough current might leakthrough the dirt to light the lamps, but not sufficient to operate thecars. In such a case, the lamps will immediately go out as soon asthe controller is turned on. Ice on the trolley wire or third rail willhave the same effect as dirt on the tracks. 252

ELECTRIC RAILWAYS PART IIIPOWER PLANTS From his study of electric generators earlier in the course thestudent is familiar with the general principles of the electrical ma-chinery of power stations, and of switchboards, and of electricalauxiliaries. With this foundation it will be easy to study the char-acteristic features of railway power stations. These stations owetheir characteristic features to the following facts: (1) The load is of a fluctuating character. (2) As a rule, the power must be generated in a form suitablefor transmission to fairly long distances because a railway ^^^usually covers a large terri- soo (3) The power supplymust be very reliable. o^ The railway load is of 5^^°a fluctuating character, first, ^/oobecause each car takes cur-rent irregularly; and second, because the number of carsoperated at one time is quitevariable. The momentary fluctuations are especially notable in a roadhaving but few cars. Here the starting or stopping of each carresults in a peak or a
