s. From the substation, current flows to the cars either throughoverhead trolley wires, or through third-rail, mounted on the track. Fig. 171 should be studied carefully as it represents a lay-outof power house, substations, and transmission system which wasstrictly up-to-date when it w^as installed a few years ago. Thepower house is at Anderson, Indiana, and from it the transmissionlines radiate in several directions. The three-phase transmissioncircuits are indicated by light solid lines and the substations bysmall rectangles. The low-tension feeders are indicated by heavysolid lines and the trolley wire by light dot-and-dash lines. Thesizes of the various wires and the distances involved are all plainlymarked on the figure. The overhead construction may be of the usual type with thetrolley wire suspended from span wires or brackets, or it may be ofthe catenary type, as in Fig. 199.
