ng the coal bunkers in the boiler room. From the bunkers thecoal falls by gravity through iron chutes to the hoppers of the under-feed stokers by which it is forced under the boilers. The ashes are drawn by hand from under the grates onto irongratings which cover the ash hoppers. The clinkers are broken upand the ashes fall into the hoppers and into small hand cars. Bymeans of these they are dumped into an ash chute connected w4ththe coal elevator, which can be used to raise them to a small storagebunker. From the ash bunker the ashes are delivered by gravityto cars outside the building. Forced Draft. Air for the boiler plant is supplied by forced draftfrom two engine-driven fans, the speed of which is controlled by anautomatic regulator controlled by the boiler pressure. When thelatter falls, the fan-engine throttle-valve is opened and the speedof the engines is increased, thus supplying more air to the boilers. At the same time it is necessary that more coal be fed to the grates. 266
