The countershaftform of drive is entirely novel in this country, but as the side-rodconstruction permits the use of a high motor mounting, the centerof gravity of the locomotive is high and this is considered by manyengineers a matter of great importance. The high center of gravityallows the body to swing sidewise under the action of side forcessuch as are produced in rounding curves and this relieves the trackrails of strain. The motors of this locomotive are the largest which have beenused in railway work. Their general appearance is shown in Fig.
