rvoirs, if necessary when themain engine is shut down, a single-cylinder, single-acting air pump,direct-connected to a 4-H. P., single-cylinder, two-cycle gasolineengine, is provided in the engine compartment. The car is heated from the exhaust gases of the gasoline engineby a system of hot water circulation on the thermo-siphon principle.Illumination is obtained by incandescent electric lights. Fig. 15 is an exterior view of the General Electric Gas-ElectricCar as above described. Fig. 16 is a diagram showing plan andelevation of the car. Gasoline power w ith gear transmission is employed in the GermanDaimler, and the gasoline-electric system in the Weitzer car in Hun-gary, and on the North Eastern in England. Self=Propelled Railway Coaches with Steam Power. This typeof self-propelled railway coach has been developed on the Europeancontinent, notably in the Serpollet type of flash boiler with keroseneas fuel, and the Purrey type of superheating water-tube boiler withcoal as fuel. 422

REVIEW QUESTIONS 425 REVIETT QUESTIONS ON THE SrrBJEOT OF POWER TRANSMISSION, 1. Cf the various arrangements for obtaining the three-wiresystem, shown in Fig. lo, which is the one most commonly usedin practice? 2. What is the drop in voltage and the loss in energy in aline 5 miles long composed of No. 6 wire, if the current flowing is6.8 amperes ? 3. What is the purpose of transposing wires ? Explain theprinciples upon which transposition is based. 4. What materials are commonly used for conductors forelectrical transmission of power ? 5. What is the disadvantage of using the bridge arrangementfor obtaining a three-wire system from a single generator? 6. Give the formula for calculating the area of conductor incircular mils of an alternating current transmission line, explain-ing the meaning of the symbols used. 7. What relation must exist between the capacity and self-induction of a line in order that the one may neutralize the other ? 8. What is the area in square mils of a No. 3 wi
