duntil the pin had passed the center they were turnedfar enough to bring the cross head back of the positionit was in when arc G was scribed? The answer is, thatwhen arc G was scribed the pin was pushing the crosshead forward and all the lost motion between pins andbrasses was taken up in that direction. If, after the pinhad passed the center and the crosshead was travelingback, it had been stopped at arc G, the lost motionwould have been taken up in the other direction, forthe reason that the pin was now pulling instead ofpushing the crosshead. The result of this would havebeen an error in the location of the arc B and also ofthe point H. But by pulling the crosshead back pastarc G and then reversing the motion and allowing thepin to push the crosshead until the dead point H waslocated, the lost motion was taken up in the samedirection as when arc G was first drawn. Having now found the dead center at point H, thenext move is to throw the reverse lever into the LOCOMOTIVE ENGINEERING

Nowstart to pinch the engine back, and with one point ofthe wheel tram in center C, watch the center H andwhen it comes exactly under the other point of thetram, stop. The engine is now on the right forwarddead center, and a vertical line should be scribed onthe guides exactly in line with the front end of thecrosshead>^This line indicates the extreme forward(travel of the crosshead, and it as important that itj should be placed there. While the engine is in the position it now is, that is,on the right forward dead center, and the valve gearj in the backward motion with all the lost motion taken^up in that direction, take the valve tram and fromI point C, Fig. 62, scribe an arc on the valve rod, start-ling slightly above the parallel line and extending con-jsiderably below it, The distance of this arc, measuredon the parallel line from center F, indicates the posi
