ast dj.nger. Theblack rhinoceros is subject to paroxysms of unprovoked fury, often plowing upthe ground for several yards with its horns, and assaulting large bushes in themost violent manner. On these bushes they work for hours with their horns, atthe same time snorting and blowing loudly, nor do they leave them in generaJuntil they have broken them into pieces. The rhinoceros is supposed by many, and by myself among the rest, to be the animal alluded to by Job, chap, xxxix.,verses 10 and il, where it is written, Canst thou bind the unicorn with hishand in the furrow? or will he harrow the valleys after thee? Wilt thou trusthim because his strength is great? or wilt thou leave thy labor to him? evi-dently alluding to an animal possessed of great strength and of untamable dis-position, for both of which the rhinoceros is remarkable. All the four varietiesdelight to roll and wallow in mud, with which their rugged hides are generallyincrusted.—Adventures in South Africa^ I. pp. 215-16.

Their flesh is toughalso, whilst that of the white rhinoceros is fat, tenderand, to the South African tribes, delicious. He is ofa comparatively gentle spirit also, and more easilyfound and dispatched. But the most interesting of the wild animals ofAfrica is the elephant, which, as is well known, is inseveral respects different from the elephant of Asia. His ears are larger, and the formation of his tough, * These singular birds are thus described by Gumming :—-These rhinoceros-birds are constant attendants upon the hippopotamus and the four varieties ofrhinoceros, their object being to feed upon the ticks and other parasitic insectsthat swarm upon these animals.
