Port Royal, Cap-tain Morris, dropped down the river about 1,000 yards on account of the sharp-shooters, besides being very much exposed to a plunging fire from the fort, endanger-ing the steam boilers. This left the Galena alone in front of the fort. About 11 oclock Port Darlingwas re-enforced by the Merrimacs crew, which had been sent down from Richmond.They sprang upon the parapets and gave three cheers. We were so close to themthat we could see the stripes on their uniforms. They then sprang to their guns and reopened fire on the fleet, particularly on theGalena, smashing every one of our six small boats, cutting so many holes in thesmokestack that it reminded one of a nutmeg grater, tearing great gaps in our spar-deck and smashing all the spare spars. One shot struck the quarter deck wheel andbinnacle, knocking them overboard. The ship began to fly all to pieces, and in ashort time we were a complete wreck. But no officer or man flinched from his duty,and our work went bravely on.
