In1849 his brother David (q. v.) died, and WilliamsLife of his brother, written with fulness of know-ledge and sympathy, deserves warm praise.Through Rossetti he became familiar with the pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and contributed to theGerm, but it does not appear that he modifiedhis artistic practice through any influence of theirs.In 1854 he paid bis first visit to Sir Walter Trevel-yan at Wallington Hall, Morpeth, and the friend-ship which ensued led to his preparing a scheme ofdecoration for the hall, which was carried out, andremains as perhaps the best specimen of his artisticpowers. These (named in order of com-pletion) formed a series of eight large designs, thewhole being exhibited at the French Gallery inPall Mall in June 1861. The spandrels of theupper arches in the same hall were filled in with aseries of eighteen scenes from the ballad of ChevyChase, and were placed in 1870, while the lowerpilasters were decorated by tall plants painted onthe stone (these being executed by various hands).His friendship with Miss Boyd of Penkill beganin 1859, and in the summer of the next year hepaid his first visit to her ancestral home, where he,in years to come, passed much of his time, wherehe did some of his best decorative work, and whereat last he was to die.
