These (named in order of com-pletion) formed a series of eight large designs, thewhole being exhibited at the French Gallery inPall Mall in June 1861. The spandrels of theupper arches in the same hall were filled in with aseries of eighteen scenes from the ballad of ChevyChase, and were placed in 1870, while the lowerpilasters were decorated by tall plants painted onthe stone (these being executed by various hands).His friendship with Miss Boyd of Penkill beganin 1859, and in the summer of the next year hepaid his first visit to her ancestral home, where he,in years to come, passed much of his time, wherehe did some of his best decorative work, and whereat last he was to die.
