n, under Dr. Ander-son, afterwards going to the University of Edin-burgh. From childhood he was devoted to drawing,and after leaving Edinburgh he came to Londonto take up the profession of an artist. He studiedat Heatherleys studio in Newman Street for sometime. Later on he entered the Royal AcademySchools, but did not long remain there, eventuallyjoining the Slade School, then under Mr. (now SirEdward) Poynter. After leaving the Slade Schoolhe set up a studio in London, but lived a nomadlife, visiting Italy and Algeria, as well as workingin Scotland and the south of England. He was ofa very modest and retiring disposition, and it wassolely on that account that he never obtained therecognition he so well deserved, though his workwas eagerly sought after by his friends. AlthoughWilson has no claim to greatness, he was a delight-ful painter, with a great charm of colour as well asfeeling and imagination in all his work. o - PAINTERS AND ENGRAVERS. before his death, and his sufferings renderedsteady work an impossibility; yet his tempera-ment did not allow him to despair, and it is thatfeeling of hope that runs through all his workwhich gives it an additional charm. His principal works include Asia, remarkablefor its charming primitive distance and thewonderful foreshortening of the face; Summerand the Winds,a small work in tempera delightfulboth in conception and colour ; Evening Shades, Alastor, a spring song, and Arcadia, as well asmany beautiful water-colour sketches and chalkdrawings. Wilson died at Castle Park, Huntly,Aberdeenshire, April 1,1890. A few of his pictureswere seen at the Dudley Gallery, the Institute,and the New Water-Colour Society. The powerand beauty of his draughtsmanship are perhapsbest seen in his preliminary studies. Two of hischalk drawings from the nude are in the ArtLibrary at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
