e. To theselarge spectacular works Stanfields manner waspeculiarly adapted. In his easel pictures he couldnever entirely free himself from the influences ofthe theatre, and his best landscapes are marred bya cold staginess of effect and of treatment.His pictures were greatly admired in their day,but their reputation has waned, and is not likelyto revive. Among important works executed byhim on commission, we may mention a series oflarge pictures painted for the Banqueting-roomat Bowood, and another series for TrenthamHall. A visit to Italy in 1839 resulted in thepainting of a number of views of Italian scenery,of which the Castello dTschia, from the Mole(1841), and Isola Bella, Maggiore (1842), arenotable examples. He also frequently treatedDutch coast scenery, and published a series oflithographic views of the Rhine, the Meuse, andthe Moselle, and a number of coast views in HeathsAnnual.
